Finding Solutions, Resolving Disputes

Are you involved in a major economic or commercial legal dispute? Do you see the benefit of engaging an experienced, neutral third party?

Perhaps I can support you. For several years, I have been spending most of my time acting as a mediator, conciliator, or arbitrator. I can easily put myself in the perspectives of those involved, having helped clients achieve their goals as an attorney for nearly 30 years.

As an arbitrator or mediator, I support the parties in finding constructive solutions. As an arbitrator, I efficiently manage national or international arbitration proceedings and make fair decisions. This might involve potential international product liability issues, disputes between shareholders, governance or supervisory board matters, or the reorganization of business relationships.

Supporting Entrepreneurial Initiative

We are in a time of transformation. Advances in technology and science are changing our world, as are the challenges of climate change, society, and geopolitics.

In addition to my work as an arbitrator and mediator, as a business angel I am particularly interested in young Legal Tech companies and startups that utilize Web 3.0 and AI. I am also interested in companies that contribute to people, society, or nature in other ways.

Learning and Teaching for Life

Since 2013, I have been working as an honorary professor at the University of Heidelberg. A few years ago, I decided to focus on topics that are particularly important for life, in addition to legal courses on negotiation, sports law, alternative dispute resolution, procedural law, and AI regulation. Therefore, my program includes a Personal Development Workshop every summer semester and a Financial Literacy Workshop every winter semester.

Based on my own experiences, I am convinced that personal development can be influenced. Both professionally and privately, I have learned what mistakes can be made and avoided in financial decisions. I am happy to share these experiences.

Social Engagement - Empowering People

Ulrike Crespo (see photo) founded the Crespo Foundation in 2001 and gave her foundation the motto "Empowering People!" I am pleased that, as a member of the foundation board of the Crespo Foundation, I can contribute to continuing her mission (since 2020).

In addition, I am on the board of trustees of the Deutsche Sporthilfe (German Sports Aid) (since 2016), the Jewish Museum (since 2017), and the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (since 2022) in Frankfurt. Previously, I was active on the board of the Harvard Club Rhine-Main e.V., in the board of trustees and executive board of the Friends of the Museum of Modern Art (MMK) (2013-2021), as well as on the board of the MMK Foundation (2011-2021). I was able to participate in the founding of the MMK Foundation as well as in the founding of the Senckenberg Support Association e.V. (2015). I served on its board during the first election period (2015 to 2018). As a lawyer and supporter, I was particularly pleased to support Yunus Social Business (YSB), Berlin (2011 to 2018).

Vita

I was born on September 23, 1964, in Hamburg. After completing vocational training at Dresdner Bank AG (1983-85), I studied law in Würzburg, Caen, Geneva, and Munich (1986-92) and received my doctorate from the University of Munich under Prof. Dr. Peter Schlosser (1998). After legal traineeship and an elective stage at the American Arbitration Association, New York, I completed postgraduate studies at Harvard University (Master of Public Administration, MPA) as a McCloy Scholar (1995-97). I also worked as a Hewlett Research Fellow in the Program on Negotiation at Harvard (Law School) and gained experience as a co-mediator in numerous disputes through the Harvard Mediation Program.

From 1998 to 2018, I was an attorney and partner at the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, Frankfurt, focusing on financial and M&A disputes, sports and association law, governance, compliance issues, and internal investigations. From 2007 to 2014, I was active as an arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Lausanne. Since 2013, I have been an honorary professor at the University of Heidelberg, and since May 2018, I have been working as an independent arbitrator and mediator. From 2013 to 2021, I was a member of the board of the German Bar Association (Deutscher AnwaltVerein, DAV), Berlin.
